"It makes you not wait for people to do the things you want." This is exactly what I love most about solo travel. Embracing all the things you want to do, regardless of your relationship status. I really enjoyed reading this.

This was great! Especially love “Feel the Fear. Do it any way.” My core mantra in my solo travel. Thank you for the Croatia advice and the profile on a woman LIVING her life. ❤️

I loved your interview! I think it's fascinating to learn from other solo travelers especially, women. I went solo to Ireland back in 2013 to research my mom's Irish lineage and had the absolute best time! I discovered so many things about my family and created the most wonderful relationships. The locals were amazing!

I felt deeply connected to this. I’m also a solo traveler — and no, courage isn’t the absence of fear.

My journey began in Austria, where I lived for two years. From there, I moved to Switzerland and stayed for one year. Later, I spent six months in Japan, between Osaka and Nagano — a place that reshaped my sense of discipline, silence, and presence. Then came France, where I lived for two years, learning the art of living slowly, questioning deeply, and valuing culture as a way of existence. I’m currently in Brazil, integrating all of that within myself. My next destination? Canada for a while — and then Europe again.

Traveling alone taught me that fear is not a stop sign; it’s a threshold. Each country offered more than landscapes — it offered philosophies of life. Different ways of relating to time, to community, to solitude, to purpose. Cultural exchange expands the soul. It dismantles rigid identities and replaces them with understanding, adaptability, and humility.

Being alone in foreign lands forces you to listen — to people, to silence, and to yourself. You learn to trust your instincts, to respect differences without needing to belong, and to realize that there are countless ways to live a meaningful life.

Solo travel isn’t an escape. It’s a return. A return to awareness, to inner strength, and to the quiet certainty that the world is not something to fear — it’s something to learn from.

I read this essay with interest because I’m constantly aware of what I’m afraid of when I travel. I always come to the same conclusion: it's not the travel itself, but the possibility of something happening to me and not being there for my daughter when she gets married. She’s only 21 and nowhere near marriage, yet every time I get on a plane, the thought is there.

Thanks for sharing, Tracy. I'm sure a lot of parents feel the same way.

Croatia sounds amazing. I’m so eager to follow along for these and even more excited that I’m featured, bringing a more matured look at solo travel for those of us that have lived a few more decades before embarking solo.
